Preventing emergencies
Looking after your teeth is even more important when wearing braces. Make the most of your treatment and avoid unnecessary emergency appointments, delays in progress and inadvertent lengthening of anticipated treatment times by thinking about the following:
- Try to stay away from eating or biting into anything hard or gooey as instructed and especially in the first few months when your braces have just been fitted. Eat absolutely no chewing gum, sweets, toffees, popcorn or peanuts.
- Cut French bread, carrots and apples etc into small bite size pieces before eating.
- Avoid biting your nails, chewing pens and pencils, or opening bottles with your teeth [yes, really – this happens, more often than you might think!].
- Resist the urge to fiddle with your brace. Tampering with delicate wires can cause you severe discomfort, damage your brace and delay finishing your treatment more than you might expect.
If you follow these rules, you will experience trouble free treatment and have the smile you’ve always wanted!
