Retainers
Retainers are appliances that ensure your teeth settle into their new position, once your braces have come off. They therefore form a vital part of the treatment and instructions on how and when to use them should be strictly adhered to.
Retainers usually consist of discreet, clear plastic removable appliances, but occasionally a wire retainer may be invisibly glued behind the front teeth as well.
The modern approach is that retainers should be worn on an ongoing basis. This is because the crowding of teeth is part of the ageing process - whether or not orthodontic treatment has been undertaken. By wearing retainers long term (usually 1–2 nights per week), you will minimise the risk of unwanted tooth movement – and fight old age as well!
